The moments in-between saving & re-recording are spent in careful reflection and contemplation. Listening is just as important as performing. Sometimes it becomes like a form of meditation.
Rules to record by: Good, isn't always good enough. When the solo artist is also the producer, the buck stops with you! You have to ask yourself does the part match the whole or are the emotions and feel lost on the performance? I always try to listen as if I am an undecided fan, and then ask myself. Would this track grab me if it wasn’t my recording?
When in doubt kick it out! Try not to let the number of 'punch ins' get you down. If it takes 2 or 200 passes to get a take worth keeping, it's not a race but rather an act of balance. It is not a test, it is an art form! It’s not a function but rather a tool.
